The last post for 2014 is about excellence. AHEPA always strives to recognize distinguished achievements and excellence in all fields for people of Hellenic descent. Today we recognize our Hoosier very own Greek-boy Jason Tsirtsis of Crown Point, Indiana. Jason is a wrestler for Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. Last night (Tuesday December 30th), Jason won the Midlands Championships in the 149lb weight class. The first Northwestern champion at the Midlands since 2012. The Midlands is a very prestigious wrestling tournament where the best wrestlers from across the country come to compete. This year nearly 60 teams spanning all three NCAA divisions and the NAIA were represented at Midlands, including wrestling clubs and unattached grapplers. Jason is currently ranked #1 in the nation in his 149lb weight class by InterMat. Jason commitment to excellence did not start last night. He comes from a family that excels in the sport of wrestling. His brother Alex went 236-0 and was a FOUR TIME Indiana state champion in high school and wrestled for the University of Iowa and was inducted into the Indiana High School Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2011. Jason was not intimidated by his brother accomplishments. In fact, he is on track to become one of the best wrestlers not only in the Tsirtsis family but in the country. In High School, Jason finished with a 176-2 record. He was a four-time state champion at Crown Point High School which made him only the eighth wrestler in Indiana state history to win four individual state titles (matching his brother Alex). He was named InterMat 2012 High School Wrestler of the year. He narrowly missed qualifying for the Olympic Team trials as an 18 year old. Those are just a few of his accomplishment at the high school level. In 2014, as a redshirt freshman, he was not only the Big Ten Champion but also the NCAA Champion in his 149lb weight class! He had a .914 winning percentage (32-3) which is ranked #2 in Northwestern history. He was named the 2014 InterMat Freshman of the Year and 2014 Big Ten Freshman of the year. We certainly look forward to follow Jason’s career as we know there is more great accomplishments to come which was evident in last night championship performance at the Midlands Championships. Last night, Supreme Governor Nick Kavadas attended the Midlands Championships to watch Jason live. Attached are some pictures from the tournament. Let Jason be an inspiration for all of us to put our best foot forward and commit ourselves to excellence in everything we do. AXIOS Jason!
