The late Walter Rhone, keystone of MHS first state football championship in 1968. This photo is from his Central Missouri State sophomore year.The Mules lost the December 1970 Pecan Bowl to top-ranked, undefeated Arkansas State, then a I-AA (now FCS) powerhouse. ASU was national champion before moving up to D-I a few years later. We traveled by bus to Arlington, Texas, for the game. Afterwards when team arrived at the hotel, Walter gave me his #20 jersey. There were few college football bowl games in 1970 and playing in one was quite an honor.
