The latest wildfire update for the Lesser Slave Lake forest protection area" "The wildfire hazard for areas north of Lesser Slave Lake will be HIGH today. Areas west and south of the lake will be MODERATE. With thundershowers moving through the area this afternoon (Wed June 5), the winds are expected to become very strong and gusty. The winds will be from the south west 25 kilometers per hour gusting up to 45. Under these windy conditions a fire will spread very quickly. Delay burning until the winds are calm and use extreme caution when working or recreating in the forest. Late Tuesday afternoon an ESRD fire tower spotted smoke in the Gift Lake area. ESRD firefighters and the local fire department were able to quickly contain and extinguish the fire."
