The main problem with politics is this... Textbook marketing psychology has been imported into politics. Began in late 90`s.. Remember the New Labour - New danger Posters? I think it associated blair with Satan ?. That was the beginning of posters without a political message... Parties started to use an emotional message Instead. Their new strategy is like this... It is generally thought that matters such as the economy are beyond the comprehension of the public. Therefore election strategy must be to associate bad feelings to the opponent, and good feelings to themselves. As neuro scientists now know that for most people, decisions are made on gut feeling. The nickname Red Ed associates the horrors of communism with Milliband for example and so people associate bad feelings with him. . Look at the way the Mail will bring up an old story about H. Harman because they know it will help Tories if people associate pedophillia with Labour. The same happened with Ed`s dad.. These are obvious examples but it is way more subtle and nuanced then this. It exists on a micro level too. The Guardian continues to lose money year after year. From what I hear it will always continue to exist, as some champagne socialists will always prop it up in exchange for their agenda being pushed. It exists only now as a vehicle for political marketing . BTW, I used the term champagne socialists. That term is a good example of how the game is played these days.... Grant Schapps or someone will go on BBC question time and just keep using these terms. Labour Mp`s will be saying out of touch and Bullingdon boys etc... They may be badly defined with little real meaning or direct relevance to the debate. But If you keep using that term Champagne Socialist, people will start to resent Labour, as the term just makes people on the left feel angry, and resentful. It Is really a threat to Democracy in its original form. Which is people voting mostly rationally.
