The management of Globalport is set to discuss the future of interim coach Eric Gonzales after the Batang Pier was ousted in the quarterfinals of the PBA Philippine Cup. Globalport’s head for basketball operations BJ Manalo said that he will meet with the coaching staff to assess the team’s performance in the Philippine Cup during which they will discuss whether to keep Gonzales on an interim basis or appoint him officially head coach. “We’ll evaluate the team, players and also the coaching staff. We’ll discuss what needs to be done to improve. That’s what management wants, continue to improve,” said Manalo. Gonzales was named coach on an interim basis after Globalport dismissed Pido Jarencio late in the elimination round. The Batang Pier’s campaign in the all-Filipino conference ended after losing to twice-to-beat Barangay Ginebra San Miguel (95-78) Friday night at the Ynares Sports Center in Anipolo City. Globalport actually had a chance to gain the twice-to-beat bonus but the team lost 82-70 to Meralco on the last day of the elims, relegating the Batang Pier to twice-to-win disadvantage against Ginebra to enter the second phase of quarterfinals. Manalo also declined to answer questions regarding the trade that sent veteran guard Alex Cabagot back to San Miguel Beer in exchange for former player Sol Mercado. The trade was deemed disadvantageous to Globalport since Cabagnot was seen to be doing well with the team.
