The mayor of Duisburg in Germany has rejected an installation by - TopicsExpress

The mayor of Duisburg in Germany has rejected an installation by Gregor Schneider that was due to open on August 15th as part of the Ruhrtriennale arts festival. The mayor made this decision based on a tragedy that occurred four years ago, when 21 people were killed at a Love Parade music festival in the city, while 500 others were injured. The installation would have been composed of a series of labyrinthine tubes inserted into the interior and surrounding park of the Lehmbruck Museum. Schneiders idea was to have visitors walk through the narrow tubes, causing them to stoop. Concerns were raised about this installation causing claustrophobia and that the artwork could cause disorientation and panic amongst individuals. The Lehmbruck Museum is unhappy with the way the issue was handled, but the mayor made this decision in the wake of the recent tragedy to avoid any further injuries to visitors of the arts festival. Hopefully Schneider can create another artwork for this exciting arts festival!
