The message that spelling isn’t important apparently hasn’t - TopicsExpress

The message that spelling isn’t important apparently hasn’t reached the producers of “Jeopardy” yet. Twelve-year-old Thomas Hurley of Newtown, Connecticut, was competing on Kids’ Week when he wrote the Final Jeopardy question: “What is the Emancipation Proclamation?” That was correct, but he made a small spelling error and put an extra “T” in the middle of “Emancipation.” Alex Trebek ruled his answer wrong, and he lost all the prize money he’d wagered. Thomas says he feels cheated. Of course, he did learn a hard lesson about both the importance of spelling and wagering money. It seems a shame, though, to punish a kid who actually knew the answer. For too many students these days, their answer to the question, “What is the Emancipation Proclamation?” would be “I dunno.” What do you think? Leave me a comment below. I read them!
