The morning after storm Santi, my 5-year Ava who’s the #1 fan of our Bahay-Kubo, whiile silently looking around at uprooted trees, fallen electric poles & structures, sadly asked my wife, “Mommy, maganda naman po ang house natin, ‘di ba? At bigay sa’tin ito ni Papa Jesus?” My wife who’s busy with her own clear up operation, simply said yes to which my daughter immediately made a follow-up question, “Then why is everything look like this now? Bakit po biglang ang kalat at ang gulo?” To this, Angeline, my middle child who was truly shaken by the night-long typhoon suddenly found a great reason to support her pessimism on rural living by teasing, “God left us last night. Santi was so strong that even God had to hide in heaven.” Seeing the sadness in Avas eyes, my son Alvyn sat beside his sisters and told them, “God never left us last night. While Santi was busy throwing tantrums everywhere, God held our little house the whole night so that it won’t be blown away. Looking at our neighbors’ concrete houses which either lost their roofs or totally got pulverized to the ground, Ava and Angeline agreed in silence. Only the hands of God can keep our fragile little house from standing in the middle of the storm, with all the walls and the entire roof, intact... Lord, please also protect the entire Visayas and Mindanao islands from super-typhoon Yolanda, the way you protected my family from Santi. At all time, make everyone feel Your divine presence...
