The national weather service has a wind chill advisory for my area - TopicsExpress

The national weather service has a wind chill advisory for my area beginning this morning at 9 a.m. through Thursday morning the same time. The winds are 10-20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. Add the winds to the single digit temperatures and it means the wind chills are 10-25 degrees below zero. Frostbite can occur in 30 minutes or less if the skin is exposed. So what of the horses and other animals? How do we keep them safe and warm? Through vigilance and constant attention to detail: Blankets; extra hay; special grain/beet pulp (if necessary and metered accordingly); heated water tanks; shelter from the wind, etc. Lastly, we have to hope their natural instincts to protect themselves will be stronger. I remember as a kid how wed play outside, in the dirt; go swim in the lakes, and wander the woods, etc. There wasnt the phobia of the natural elements being the enemy; if anything, the natural elements can be the solution for staying healthy. Its during these extreme weather conditions we must learn to trust the natural instincts of our livestock. The wind blows to the south and turns to the north; round and round it goes, ever returning on its course. (ECC 1:6) Julia Roberts spent some time with the Mongolians in 1999.
