The news just goes from depressing to traumatising. The meaningless loss of life in Sydney quickly followed by yet another horrific story, as the Taliban in Pakistan have murdered 132 school children and 9 staff in the name of God and revenge. Here I am walking around Madrid taking pictures of twinkling Christmas lights, while hundreds of parents are trying to come to terms with the fact that they will never hear their childs laughter again. Im cursing at the TV screen and wishing I could do so much more to change the world. Its just too heartbreaking to even contemplate. I will continue to write and sing life-affirming music that promotes love and harmony, but right about now that seems pretty lame and Im wishing I had some seriously awesome super powers, and perhaps a fetching red cape! Turning off the news now, but what a sad sad story this is. My heart goes out to all of these people who have lost so much. The fact that this loss has been brought about in the name of someones God is just too perverse for comprehension. Why do so many people from so many religions still insist on using God as an excuse to commit atrocities, promote violence, alienate family members, deny humans their fundamental human rights, and spread hate, hate and more hate. GOD IS LOVE! Im not religious anymore in the slightest, but this much I know to be sure. I had the great privilege of being raised by two of the most extraordinary Christians who taught me and showed me this through example all my life. GOD IS LOVE and anything that is not love, is NOT GOD! You dont need to go to church to learn this. You dont need to open a single sacred book or sing a hymn or say a prayer. GOD IS LOVE. Thats it. And it really is just that simple. Weve got to work harder to spread this message somehow, to our friends and our neighbours and our families and most of all our children.
