The next day I and Gerald Singer, author of St. John, Off the Beaten Path went out to Oppenheimer Bay. What a great snorkel that is, up the east shoreline around to Perkins Cay. If you want to see one of the smallest fish, the Spinyhead Blenny, this is the place to go. Examine the Mustard Hill Corals to find them. Theyre a tube blenny, barely an inch long. Once you see one, youll see lots of them. Someone said they had seen or heard of a baby octopus. It seems to be baby octopus season. I found another one in a recess of a Boulder Brain Coral. And always a delight, a Porcupinefish was holed up under a rock. He was a mature, two foot long one. The other highlight of the day was getting this great picture of an Orangespotted Blenny, which isnt even listed in the Reef Set, but non the less, fairly common if you are looking for them with a sharp eye. I also took an updated picture of a colony of Mat Zoanthid that has multiplied by 100% in the last three years. Lastly, Im posting this Hairy Clinging Crab, although reported to be rare in the Caribbean, I see them quite often. Their ability to blend in with their surrounding is keen, and they come out most often late in the day, which is when I like to go snorkeling.
