The next topic of the For Our Kids Show, October 09th is Family Court and the Reality of Grief, Loss and Trauma for Children and Families. Our US guest co-host is Dan Brewington, a father, alienated from his children who will also be sharing his shocking story which was one of the family court cases featured in the recent documentary Divorce Corp., which exposed the 50 billion US a year, corrupted, divorce industry. One of our expert guests is Edward Kruk, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Social Work at the University of British Columbia, specializing in child and family policy. As a child and family social worker in Canada and the U.K., he has practiced in the fields of welfare rights, child protection, school social work, hospital social work, and family services. He is currently teaching and practicing in the areas of family mediation and addiction. He the author of many books including The Equal Parent Presumption: Social Justice in the Legal Determination of Parenting After Divorce; Divorced Fathers: Childrens Needs and Parental Responsibilities; Mediation and Conflict Resolution in Social Work and the Human Services; and Divorce and Disengagement. He is President of the International Council on Shared Parenting.* We will also be speaking with expert Dr. Julie MacFarlane, B.A., LL.M., (London), Ph.D, (C.N.N.A.) from the University of Windsor, Ontario who has published widely in the area of conflict resolution, mediation and legal practice. In 2013, Julie reported on a 12-month empirical study conducted in three Canadian provinces with individuals representing themselves in court without a lawyer (self-represented litigants or SRLs). The study data illustrates a range of negative consequences experienced by SRL’s as a result of representing themselves. These include depletion of personal funds and savings for other purposes; instability or loss of employment caused by the amount of time required to manage their legal case; social and emotional isolation from friends and family as the case becomes increasingly complex and overwhelming; and a myriad of health issues both physical and emotionally* We will be discussing Systemic Abuse and the trauma endured by those who go through it. We have 5 different guests whose incredible stories range from being jailed for crying in court, others being told to shut up and sit down by judges to one who was sentenced to 5 years in jail just for criticizing a judge on his blog. These are parents who were highly involved with their children and suddenly found themselves forcefully removed from their children’s lives and have been profoundly wounded.
