The next time I hear someone use that its not illegal to seek asylum to imply that we should open our borders to people coming to Australia by boat, Im going to lose my shit. Of course its not, thats not the issue. The right of the individual to seek legitimate asylum and the right of a nation to protect its borders are two separate issues, and both are valid. You may have a certain view on who should be allowed to come here, but that does not override the right of a legitimate and democratically elected government to pursue its own rights on behalf of the nation. If our concern is, as should be, in the interests of those legitimately seeking asylum, then surely that includes a protection of their safety by discouraging what is a rather dangerous trip across a rather treacherous ocean. Why cant we engage in a sensible debate about dealing with the push issues and creating better channels for those seeking legitimate political (and not economic) asylum, rather than continuing a debate on which there really shouldnt be debate at all? Yes its a human right to seek asylum. Lets all move on.
