The number of young women taking birth control pills for acne is staggering. Commercials for some popular oral contraceptives list clearer skin as one of their benefits. Contributing acne to hormones, a leading dermatologist said that it was much easier to alter hormone levels with hormones rather than diet. As long ago as 1971, a study of Canadian Inuit showed that they didnt develop acne until they started eating processed foods. Typically, the only dietary recommendations given for patients with acne is to avoid chocolate and greasy foods. Chocolate in and of itself has never been shown to worsen acne. However, a low glycemic diet rich in vegetables and devoid of processed foods has been shown to be highly beneficial. Not surprisingly, many of the studies showing dietary changes to be beneficial are from outside the U.S., such as in Australia and Korea. Americans spend literally billions on skin care products.
