The only way you would draft a QB this year is if Mariota is a lock to be a potential HOFer. That is not the case from what I have read. Running QBs must be pocket passers first and be able to know when to get rid of the ball. QBs like RG III and Cam Newton have discovered that they simply cannot outrun the defense in the pros like they were used to in college. They have paid the price. Johnny Football will be the next to learn that lesson. Personally, I think the Jets should look for a diamond in the rough elsewhere in the college market. Look for an intelligent young man, 64 or taller with good feet, mechanics and a cannon. He doesnt even necessarily need to be on a team in the TOP 20 in my opinion. You get a guy like that cheap and put him on your bench to learn. The Jets #1 priority, however, should be a complete shift in approach and attitude toward the game of football. The same old same old approach isnt going to work. Look at a few of the teams that have had long term success and start to model that approach. This means that both Idzik and Ryan need to be fired. Make a statement by hiring a GM that has free reign to build the coaching and scouting staff as he feels fit. Not a single persons job should be safe. In other words, give this team an enema. At the same time tell the key players that you want that you are remodeling and that they are going to be the long term foundation of the future. Keep enough older veterans around to ensure leadership. I personally would release Michael Vick and Geno Smith at the end of the year. Neither of these QBs are going to make the team competitive next year. My vote would be to bring in a veteran QB with some experience. Those options might include Hoyer, McCoy, or some other veteran. I am excluding Sanchez only beacuse there is likely no chance he would consider a return to NY (unless of course there was a wholesale elimination of the front office?). I would keep Matt Simms and give tell him he has a shot to win the starting job. If not, he provides some good continuity and I have always liked his decision making.
