The past few weeks have been physically and emotionally taxing as I sort through all my parents belongings in preparation for the sale of their house. My dad died three years ago, Mom is in a nursing home, and both my sisters live further away, so I am doing the bulk of the sifting. It feels awkward and presumptuous to go through the papers, mementoes, clothes, furniture, and photos of others and decide what gets tossed, stored, sold, passed on to kids and grandkids and what few things can be taken to Mom in her small space. Still, its sweet to find the little things: my dad, the writers scribbled notes, his favorite song in his walkman, bookmarked novels still on his nihtstand, a little bag of goodies he bought at Shopko a few days before he died. My moms drawers are stuffed with cards and scribbled pictures from her grandkids and newspaper clippings with their names highlighted. There are many more drawers, closets and files to sort, and as hard as it is, I am thankful for the little blessings I keep finding.
