The place of dreams and night visions in knowing who to marry and having direction in life There are many languages through which the Holy Spirit communicates to a child of God. Dreams and night vision are just one of them. However, there is need for a balance and some caution here. This is because dreams can come from three sources. Dreams can come from God Dreams can come from the devil Dreams can come from you I also want you to know that when you dream, it does not make you more spiritual than one other person that does not dream. Why do I say that? You see, the primary way that God communicate to all His children is through the inner witness. You can rely on inner witness but you cannot rely on dreams all the time. In fact, I usually tell people that dreams should confirm what God already told you and ought not be taken as the only means of divine direction. Do I have anything against dreams? No! If there is anybody who used to dream, it’s me! Oh my my. My second name should have been Joseph! I dreamt about everything and anything as a young believer. It got to a stage, if I wanted to know anything from God, all I needed to do was to take a nap. I had several visions of the night. The call of God upon my life came through a vision of the night. I had just finished my secondary school, back then at Ijebu Ode Grammar School. One of those nights, I slept and I found out that rapture was taking place. I saw how people were taken in a twinkle of an eye just as the scripture described it. 1Co 15:51-53 KJV (51) Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, (52) In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. (53) For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. Yes, I saw that. The sky split into two and there was Jesus Christ. Slowly, he descended to where I was standing. He stood in front of me, like three feet apart. It’s so real to me like it just happened, and even as I write, my eyes are getting wet, my toes are tingling, and goose pimples are all over me. He stood there, and there and then called me into ministry. What did he say? He said nothing and yet said everything! He didn’t open His mouth to say a word, but as I looked at Him in that dream (He was in a white gown, with a blue mantle draped on Him and brown sandals), His eyes seemed like an endless well love, moving slowly and radiating an indescribable well of love that overwhelmed me that I just wept. I wept till I woke up weeping and I knew something had taken place in my life. I stood up weeping, went to knock on my dad’s door and I told him I just saw Jesus Christ. My dad who was not born again at the time and who used to be an English teacher, simply said: ‘It’s alright son, in Literature, that is what we call hallucination!” Can you imagine? But I knew what I just experienced was real and no hallucination. Something did happen. I was not to respond to that call until several years later, after my university days, but it remained indelible and a strong foundation of my experience from God. I have gone to all this length that dreams can be genuine like the one I just narrated. Joseph’s call came through dreams! But you cannot rely on a dream when you have not read your Bible for many weeks and you have not been fellowshipping with God. Also if you see a girl or a guy you like and you think about him or her a lot, you may start having dreams about that person and it may not be from God. It’s just a dream as a result of your thoughts. So, don’t go and propose because of one dream. Pray and allow God to speak to you through inner witness as well. I probably had more dreams about my wife and got to know she is the one I would marry more than you. By the time I have seen her in my dreams in close to twenty times, I knew. I saw her family house in my dream and described it to her. She felt somebody had told me. I saw her studying God’s word. I saw her standing beside me in a crusade ground and several others. I had these dreams over a period of nine months and yet I did not propose because God didn’t tell me to! I only went ahead to propose when He said move and when I had inner witness. Sometimes, the dream is for information and not for stepping out. You see, God will tell you of things to come because you are His friend, He is just informing you, He is not asking you to propose, because she is not ready yet! Sometimes, it is the lady that gets to know, don’t get suggestive, just hold on till he comes. This is why God must have spoken to you and you proposed, yet you got a “nail.” And you say, “But God told me!” Yes, God told you and showed you your spouse but did He also ask you to propose right away? You might know her through a dream, but you should move by His voice that comes through inner witness! When I ought to step into ministry and I was reluctant, God spoke to me every time I closed my eyes to sleep or take a nap. I would see myself preaching, holding meetings, some of them were to happen some ten years after! I would see myself casting out demons and laying hands with demonstration of God’s spirit. Now this is where I am going. All of a sudden, around 2003 upwards, the dreams began to get less frequent. Two to three dreams in a day became once a week and then once a month. I was bothered and worried. Has God left me? But God was training me, so that I can rely on the Holy Spirit to hear Him all the time and not have to be knocked to sleep before I could hear anything! So you see why your frequency of dreams or visions does not make you superior than a non-dreamer? Learn to hear God, if a dream comes, fine, but don’t seek dreams or visions or the devil can give you one. Undoubtedly, dreams will continue to be a language of God’s Spirit, but you should train your human spirit to learn to hear God all the time. This is very important in helping you to make decisions in life. I pray for you this morning and I come against all false and diabolic dreams in your life; I rebuke them in Jesus name.
