The power of enthusiasm is the energy that drives every successful idea. And enthusiasm has its taproot in the fertile soil of vision. We will see shortly how all of this operated in the life of David of Israel. But where does vision come from? Ralph Neighbour, Jr., says that the seven first words of the Church are, “I can do all things through Christ.” Surely Christ is the font of our best imagination and vision. The finest visions that can possess a man come directly from God through Christ. But I must sound this word of warning. God does not shout His best vision through hassled Christian living. It is in quiet that He gives the most delivering visions of life. Psychologist Nathaniel Branden wrote: Innovators and creators are persons who can to a higher degree than average accept the condition of aloneness. They are more willing to follow their own visions even when it takes them far from the mainland of the human community. Alan Loy McGinnis also reminds us that “Jesus’ life was checkered with solitude,” The final essential aspect of vision that you must understand is how to hold onto it. Holding onto a redeeming vision through all kinds of trials can be hard. New visions burn brighter than old ones. In the press of your days and years, old dreams can lose their fire and hence the enthusiasm they once supplied. A wealthy American immigrant sadly testified, “I heard that in America there was a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I found the gold but, young man, I lost the rainbow.” Clinging to rainbows can be your most arduous task. Perhaps it needs to be said that your visions will serve you best not when you are their keepers, but when they are yours. Your visions will be far more productive when they possess you. So the real issue is not how do you hold your visions, but how your visions keep you. I want to suggest two ingredients for the recipe of vision-keeping. Number one is an adequate quiet time. When you are quiet at the altar of your own trust, your vision will hold its place in your life. Visions rebuild themselves in quietness, not in the hurry and noise of life.
