The privatization of education debate often overlooks the importance of the finished product. Short term considerations of profit and loss can undermine long term gains. We cant ignore the important economic issue of a well educated child and a skilled workforce. Education is a long term investment, not just a short term cost. Investing in our future and focusing on the quality of our education creates thoughtful, reasoning, inquisitive workers for our economy. Quality of education directly impacts their earnings potential and the economic future of Utah. The fact is, a highly skilled workforce is good for the economy. David L. Kirp in the The New York Times makes a good point about what happens when we approach education as a business: While these reformers talk a lot about markets and competition, the essence of a good education — bringing together talented teachers, engaged students and a challenging curriculum — goes undiscussed. Value for money shouldnt be just counted in dollars. There is great value in doing the best that we can to create a thriving public education system that fosters academics, community enrichment and the education of children as they grow into productive, skilled and innovative Utah citizens. Please LIKE and SHARE if you think education should put children and the economic future of Utah first. Not Left. Not Right. Forward!
