The proven model of locally-managed marine areas (LMMAs) continues - TopicsExpress

The proven model of locally-managed marine areas (LMMAs) continues to make ground around the world, including in East Africa. The viral scaling described in the below article of nearshore waters managed by local communities progressing through time to increasingly more, larger, and networked areas is a phenomenon seen throughout the Pacific Islands during the past two decades, including in Fiji, Indonesia, the Solomon Islands, the Philippines, Micronesia, and more recently, Maui (Hawaii). Such community-focused marine resource management efforts are not new at all; in fact in many places they are deeply rooted in ancient belief systems and customary practices. In the western world and media -- however -- such traditional practices have the appearance of being fresh and innovative, particularly in places where there has been widespread failure of top-down (centralized) marine resource management efforts for more than a century. Returning back to old, proven ways of thinking and management, while strengthening them to meet new challenges of the 21st century, can sometimes be the most effective path forward toward sustainability.
