The question comes up every year. Why do we need a Black Gay - TopicsExpress

The question comes up every year. Why do we need a Black Gay Pride? Quite frankly, Im tired of answering it. And, quite honestly, Im tired of seeing the overwhelming majority of people asking that question coming from the white (usually male) community. Yes, we can have a space for Black Pride and, yes, it can be a place where all people are welcome. Im sure some simply assume that white folks arent welcome at a Black Gay Pride event, but I was at the event last night, and so were lots of other white folks. Just as straight allies are welcome to LGBT Pride events, white folks who are allies to black folks are welcome at Black Gay Pride events. I dont see anything wrong with black LGBT pride events, or Latino pride events or Asian pride events (in places like San Francisco). Many racial minorities want to celebrate culture and heritage while at the same time celebrating their part of the LGBT community. Would we ever deny a space for lesbians to celebrate womens history? Would we deny a space to elder LGBT people to work on or address issues unique to them? Would we deny it to youth? Or, to transgender people? The same question, Why do we need a Black Pride? can be turned right back around on the LGBT community as a whole: Why do we need an LGBT Pride when straight people dont have Straight Pride? The answer to that question is the same as the answer to Why do we need Black Pride?
