The question was asked: Who was the first African-American driver - TopicsExpress

The question was asked: Who was the first African-American driver to compete in NASCARs premier division. And everyone who chimed in got the wrong answer! Not that youd be expected to get it. I wouldnt have gotten it right, either. It was Elias Bowie (1914-2005) who finished 28th at Bay Meadows Speedway on July 31, 1955. Elias was a WWII veteran who drove his 53 Cadillac in the race wearing his trademark fedora. So, Norman Layton...heres your answer.
