The reality of the Bayah (pledge / oath of allegiance). Most details around this in the Quran can be found in Surah Fath (The Victory). There is also a reference to it (specifically for women) in Surah Mumtahina (Her Examination). For the purposes of this post however, we will limit ourselves to verse 10 of Surah Fath. It is a conclusive summary, of the depth and immensity of the Bayah, for those who are mureed and those who arent. Surah Fath-verse 10 Those who swear allegiance to you (O dear Prophet Mohammed - peace and blessings be upon him), do indeed in fact swear allegiance to God; God’s Hand is above their hands; so whoever breaches his/her oath, does so to the detriment of his/her own soul; and whoever fulfils the covenant he/she has with God - so very soon God will bestow upon him/her a great reward. Insha Allah, (for those of us that are mureeds-disciples of a Sufi Shaykh, and for those who will become mureeds someday) may we all truly grasp the serious commitment required from us, in the battle against the evils within us (Nafs) and all around us.
