The reason why fat was made out to be such a bad thing was to lower the percentage of Americans dying of heart disease. So fat was considered our enemy in the 70s or 80s, to urge people to eat healthier. Of course, Americans take everything overboard, so everything had to be fat free, and all types of fats, even the good ones found in fish, and other proteins, became bad, and were replaced with, none other than, carbohydrates. To make up for the lack of flavor in fat free foods, carbohydrates spiked. The result being, less people dying of heart disease, but more people living with Type 2 diabetes, and even higher obesity rates. And you might be thinking, oh, I can just reduce sugar, my other refined carbs are fine. No. They arent. When your body breaks down your food in the digestive track, it cant tell the difference between, say, a bagel, and a juice box loaded with sugar. The government created food pyramid, and most recently, the MyPlate program shows that more than a quarter of your plate during meals should consist of carbs. Just carbohydrates. Then, each consisting of about less than a quarter of you plate, should be fruits, veggies, and lean protein. When in reality, your plate should consist of about half fruits or veggies, a large portion of protein, and less than a quarter portion of carbs, for energy. If you intake too much carbs, then youll have all of this energy that wont get used up, and instead, become stored as fat. Of course, if you are more active, then of course your carb intake should go up, so you get sufficient energy, but your typical American shouldnt be eating as much carbs as a professional athlete. And there is also a problem about red meat. Red meat is not unhealthy when eaten in m o d e r a t i o n. It has a lot of healthy fats, and is rich in vitamins and minerals, especially iron, which his crucial for healthy blood. Point of this essay is, moderation is key, and fat is not your problem, carbs are.
