The recent surge in posts regarding FB Messenger has prompted me - TopicsExpress

The recent surge in posts regarding FB Messenger has prompted me to put in my two cents. Many of you know I was a career IT professional at varying levels for 17 years and I still work in IT part-time. In other words Im more than qualified to address this issue. There have been several alarmist posts painting a grim and scary picture of FB Messenger (hereafter FBM). I would like to say, for the record, these articles are poorly (if at all) researched and alarmist pseudo-tech drivel. The only statement correct in these articles is the fact apps on mobile devices request permissions. Thats it! The rest is pure conjecture. Every app, on every mobile operating system needs permission to access the features of the device. Those permissions can range from obvious to frightening. A Well, duh! permission would be Internet enabled apps requesting access to the WiFi/Cellular Data network. The scary-sounding permissions request access to your contacts, camera, and text messages, etc. These permissions are set either when the app is downloaded (Android) or when the app is launched for the first time (iOS). Permissions are multipurpose but there are two big ones. The first is convenience and the second is security. By granting an app permission to access your camera, texts, microphone, etc. you are telling the device software Hey, its okay! You dont have to prompt me every time FBM needs to access a feature. Think how annoying it would be if every time you sent a picture via text, the phone prompted Are you sure you want to send a text message, access the network and pictures?. Thats three different prompts for one user action! Nobody would text again! Regarding security, if someone DOES happen to download a malicious app, they can shut it down via permissions and then delete it. Facebook is not accessing your phones private information willy-nilly. They are too happy with their money to invade user privacy that far! Please do not pass along these articles and videos! Youre merely perpetuating unfounded panic and misinformation!
