The rich young ruler had it all. He had kept all 10 commandments and was exceedingly wealthy. He wanted eternal life. Jesus told him that he only lacked one thing…sell all that he had, give it away to the poor and become His disciple. The rich young ruler couldn’t do it, in fact, it is recorded in Luke 18:23 that after he heard what Jesus asked of him he became distressed and very sorrowful because he was so rich. I truly believe that it is almost impossible to let go of something when you have defined yourself by it. Some people can’t let go of a relationship, because it defines who they are. Some people can’t let go of material things, because it gives them their self-worth. Who we are should never be found in anything or anyone, but Christ. The rich young ruler let his riches define who he was rather than, choosing who Jesus called him to be; His disciple. Don’t ever hold onto something so tight that you become defined by it and lose sight of who you are in Christ. Examine your heart today and check if you are holding on to things, good or bad that is hindering you from being all that God has called you to be.
