The second most popular carol ... [on a top 10 chart compiled from the BBC’s Songs of Praise, Classic FM & Premier Christian Radio and Catholic weekly The Tablet] ... is another piece of mid-19th century romanticism that most congregations would struggle to get through, especially at Midnight Mass after a few sherries. In the Bleak Midwinter was written by Christina Rossetti, who devoted much of her life to writing devotional poetry when she was not sitting as a pre-Raphaelite model for her brother Dante Gabriel Rossetti and his friends John Millais and William Holman Hunt. The settings by Gustav Holst and Harold Darke are both extremely popular, but neither is exactly an easy sing and this is a carol which is better left to trained choirs. -from a London Times article by my professor of divinity and well-loved fixture of the St. Andrews Gilbert & Sullivan Society, Dr. Ian Bradley. I hope the combined voices of Purdue Musical Organizations at their annual Christmas Show exceed expectations for performance of this classic English carol! Merry Christmas on this Third Sunday before Advent.
