The second movement of Samuel Barbers Symphony No. 2 is also - TopicsExpress

The second movement of Samuel Barbers Symphony No. 2 is also published as a separate piece entitled NIGHT FLIGHT. This stirring work from 1943 depicts a lonely pilot on his way back to base. Barber captures the solitary and contemplative nature of the work beautifully. At about the 5:30 mark, a concert A (played by the E-flat clarinet - the only note played by that instrument in the movement) is heard in a syncopated rhythm through the end of the piece. This represents the homing signal picked up by the plane, which will guide it and its pilot home and to safety. Barbers entire second symphony is a unique story in and of itself. He ordered all of the parts and score destroyed and he withdrew it from publication (yes, he was a big enough star to do that!). Fortunately, an archive copy was tucked away in a warehouse and resurrected several years after his death. Great stuff. https://youtube/watch?v=x_89chdsbIw
