TRANSLATION Ones own mother, the wife of the guru, the wife of a brāhmaṇa, the wife of a king, the cow, the nurse, and the earth are known as the seven mothers of a man. (Cāṇakya Paṇḍita) Sometimes the argument is made that a man who has a wife cannot be a spiritual master. This foolish argument is defeated by this verse, which directly states the wife of the spiritual master is one of seven mothers. The gurus wife is the second mother in the list mentioned just after the mother from whom one has taken birth. Sankarshan Das Adhikari
