The sixties and seventies was a great time for quality movies in kannaDa. There were new wave movies like saMskAra, kADu, etc. and commercially artistic movies like beLLimODa, gejjepUje, uyyAle, SarapaMjara, etc. Many movies were embellished with excellent music by stalwarts such as lingappa, vijayabhAskar, rAjan-nAgEMdra and others. There were excellent directors too led by puTTaNNa and lakshmInArAyaNa. lakshmInArAyaNa set up a trend with nAndi. Later on he was called “nAndi” lakshimInArAyaNa. It is a very serious and poignant movie produced by the brothers Jawahar and vAdirAj. Interestingly vAdirAj, a shortish guy, acts as a young boy in this movie. Their sister hariNi dons the heroine’s mantle. kalpanA too acts in this film. The hero is rAjkumAr. For India in 1964, the film has a very serious theme. It is about a deaf and mute girl (played by hariNi - read about her at hindu/fr/2006/04/07/stories/2006040703300100.htm ). The hero, a school master, goes to a new town and rents a small house to live. His wife (kalpanA) becomes pregnant and passes away during child birth. The hero tries to bring up the child by himself. It soon transpires that the child is deaf and mute. He marries a deaf and mute girl, whose family he meets on a trip with the school children to nandI hills. He tries to teach her slowly communicating skills. Both of them learn the sign language and she learns to write in kannaDa. On deepAvaLi day, while she was cooking, the young child dies in a fire mishap. Afterward, both the husband and wife try to devote their lives to teach kids with hearing disability and they get training too in this regard. Finally she delivers a child. The couple find out that the child is not deaf. Realistic portrayals by all actors is a hallmark of this movie. Much later, in the eighties I watched the movie “Children of Lesser God” that dealt with the same theme and a few years ago the tamizh movie “mozhi” that had the same theme. The hindI movie kOSish (1972) too that had this theme which went on to win presidential award that was denied to nAndi, a much earlier release. nAndi had good songs too. Here are some songs from nAndi (music by vijayabhAskar).
