The skies have mostly cleared across Colorado in the wake of the storm system that brought rain and some snow to the state early today. We have received some beautiful photos of the fresh snow that fell above 11,000 feet early today. The weather will stay cool, dry and quiet for the rest of the afternoon and through the evening. Temperatures will still be running a bit cool, so a light jacket or sweater will be handy if you are heading out for the evening. Skies will stay mostly clear tonight all across the state. Lows will dip to the 30s in the mountains, with 40s at lower elevations. Thursday will dawn mostly clear, but changes will be coming during the afternoon. A new storm system is moving our way from Montana and will bring cold air and a mix of rain and snow to our state by late Thursday afternoon. The weather should be dry through midday, but between 3 and 5 PM rain showers will develop along the Front Range, with some snow over the northern mountains and foothills. You will have no issues with commuting tonight or tomorrow morning - aside from sunshine glare. By Thursday evening, roads will be getting wet in Denver and a little white over the higher elevations to the northwest! The main timeframe for rain and snow will be between 9 PM Thursday and 9 AM on Friday. Friday morning will be the sloppy time for roads over the Front Range area. The mountains and foothills will have wet and perhaps slightly snow covered conditions - mainly above 8,500 feet. In Denver, and along the I-25 Corridor, the roads will be wet, with a mix of light rain and snow possible until mid morning. This will not be a major storm system, but will bring about a quarter to a half inch of moisture, mostly in the form of rain and wet, melting snow for Denver. The northern and central mountains, along and east of the Divide may pick up a good 3-6 inches of snow above 11,000 feet! The coldest air will reach the Denver area early Friday, with lows in the mid 30s! Denver will likely avoid a hard freeze this time, but some areas could fall into the low to mid 30s by Friday mornings with patchy frost. If you live in an area that is a bit lower in elevation or historically more prone to an early freeze, you may want to practice a little plant parenthood and cover your garden Thursday night and early Friday. If you are less than thrilled with this early cold snap, do not get too depressed - it will be very short-lived! The good news on this is the timing of the rain and the cold. By Friday afternoon, skies will be clearing, but temperatures will still be chilly with highs in the 50s. A nice, dry and warm weather pattern will arrive just in time for the weekend as temperatures quickly rebound into the 70s at lower elevations, with 60s in the mountains. The weather pattern will be dry and warm right through the middle of next week.
