The sordid manner in which each of the two major parties manipulated the system to cover up their human rights violations is a crucial issue that never quite figured in the electoral discourse, not even when they claimed to be concerned about ‘low level politics’. From the histrionics played out in Varanasi, it is evident that even an ‘outsider’ like Arvind Kejriwal, who professes to have little ideological baggage, has been wary of disturbing this cozy consensus. Kejriwal too seemed to have bought into the cynical logic of going easy on 2002 lest it consolidated Modi’s standing among Hindus.
