The sound of an acoustic double bass is beautiful. When amplified a little in a club, so that you can still hear a lot of the acoustic sound, its ok. At a festival, the sound of the pickup through a huge PA with sub woofers is just horrible, especially when the sound engineers are used to rock and roll levels. I had waited 40 years to hear Dave Holland in the flesh, but lasted about 30 mins before I could take no more. All subtlety and detail obliterated by a sound man who thinks a bass drum is a kick drum and whose point of reference is probably U2.
