The spiritual journey, it seems to me, is more like the real story of Christmas, the story where God is with an unwed teenage mother who is finding her way in a world where she is not seen as a full human being, the story where people in power deny rights and homes and life to those on the edge, the story where a baby changes everything, the story where people travel far distances seeking answers they already had, the story where God is not above us, distant from us, beyond us, but a story about God being with us, as we are. It’s about what is possible, even we’re not ready at all, when we are not at our best, our God is the kind of thing that manifests in real time in our real lives. God is in our ordinaries. We don’t need to be at our best, we don’t need to be extraordinary, nor do our communities, or our leaders, in order for the Divine to be with us.
