The team at Browns Ferry just returned Unit 1 to service after successfully completing a planned refueling and maintenance outage. During the outage, workers installed 308 new fuel assemblies and performed crucial maintenance to prepare Unit 1 for its next two-year operational run generating low-cost, carbon-free electricity. Refueling outages are about more than loading new fuel. They require thorough planning and tight teamwork to perform equipment upgrades, maintenance, inspections and tests that help TVA fulfill one of its top priorities – the safe and reliable operation of its five nuclear power units. The first photo shows Unit 1’s 95-ton reactor pressure vessel head being moved into position as part of preparations for unit startup. The second photo shows a 15-ton, stainless steel in-vessel inspection platform being lifted by crane from the reactor cavity after completion of refueling activities and vessel inspections. Other photos show Browns Ferry employees at work during the outage.
