The team undertook its first training session of the year this morning at Berry Head. This was a joint exercise with Torbay CRT to practise various cliff rescue techniques that we use all the time. Holdfasts were set up at the top of the cliff and the Cliff Techs firstly went over to retrieve a dummy in our Alpine-lite stretcher. The opportunity was then taken to send various other members of the team down the cliff attached to the techs and then retrieve them using our casualty harness. It may not look it from the photos but Coastguarding can be quite arduous at times. We carry a lot of equipment, some of it quite heavy, which we often might need to carry considerable distances. Probably the most disliked task we find ourselves doing, especially at Berry Head, is hammering in our metre-long holdfast stakes. As most of Berry Head is solid limestone it can be extremely difficult to get them in the required distance. Both teams worked very well together and it was an extremely beneficial exercise for all team members.
