The term train wreck has become an ingrained metaphor in our language to refer to a large disaster readily visible to the public. Although perhaps overused today, It is not difficult to see how the metaphor came about when viewing images like this set of five photos in which locals gather to view the aftermath of a 1902 wreck on the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha Railway near Fairchild, WI. J. Foster Adams photograph. Mid-Continent Railway Historical Society collection.
