The thing that upsets me here is not homophobia. Its the use of black/brown bodies to serve a particular geo-political agendas. This is so apparent in the media. While I do not condone Russias systemic homophobia, I do condemn the gaze on homophobia over there, or on the other side on in the east and south. I do condemn this looking at homophobia from places in the north - places which are committing equal if not worse violation - like drone attacks from the US, like gross xenophobia of the UK or policing the bodies of women of colour in France. Its time to critique the use of the LGBTI struggle in this way. Its time to highlight how people are suddenly willing to talk about racism over there while being entirely implicit in racist institutions here - like Johannesburg Pride.
