The traditional K-12 public schools work well for a lot of our kids but not for all of our kids. Unfortunately, the overall quality of our AK K-12 education lacks behind too many other States, and I believe its mainly due to a lack of education K-12 competition and lacking local educational policy making. I champion cyber schools, home schools, charter schools, voucher (school of choice), and I m willing to look at other out of the box quality education delivery thinking. I firmly believe that as a nation if we operate our education system with a diverse and more competitive paradigm approach that we can once again provide a K-12 education second to none. I also believe that the States ought to have control over their education policies with little to no interference from the federal government. As an Libertarian and educator myself, Im pro individual freedom and that includes freedom of K-12 educational choice. ~ Jim McDermott, M.S. Tundra Onion reply back to Jim, Have you kept abreast of the recent discussions regarding the high rate of turnover of rural teachers and the correlation with poor learner performance in rural Alaska? Jim McDermott reply to Tundra Onion, I have and I would love to sit down with community leaders and brainstorm direction concerning an education strategy that works. I would like to include bringing to the table some of my thoughts on the topic and together I am sure we can offer proposals that will work for our rural communities. Thank you for your follow-up. ~ Jim McDermott, University of Alaska Instructor.
