The trouble with the Libs. (And Ill get to the others) My work brings me in contact with some hard core old school rusted on liberal party voters. I have nothing against them and most are very nice people, who through good fortune, good jobs and fortunate lives were able to set themselves up for very comfortable retirement. Most of them believe that hard work and wise choices got them there. While that may be true, they were also amazingly lucky in this world. Many were builders of things and doers of great deeds and worked in areas of medicine, law and engineering. Pillars of society. To vote anything other than liberal was unthinkable. What would their friends say? There may have been instances of doctors wives voting for Whitlam in 1972, in fact there must have been. But by and large its business as usual in Camberwell, Kew, Vaucluse and Mossman. They voted for Menzies and Gorton and Holt and Fraser secure in the knowledge that these stalwarts would do the right thing, not rock the boat and keep the country on a steady as she goes even keel. Socially conservative, these Governments changed as little as possible. I believe that these people still believe that thats what theyre voting for and are having difficulty coming to terms with the clueless malicious fools who occupy Menzies hallowed ground and most wont change. We await word from the Doctors Wives.
