The truth is now out - The writing is on the wall for NUMSA The truth is now out The writing is on the wall for NUMSA In NUMSA’s latest attention-seeking message, the “united front”, “socialist movement” and other NUMSA dream terminology is gone. NUMSA is in the end only claiming to be part of a commonplace “broad coalition”, now out in the open. The “broad coalition” consists of NUMSA plus: · GIWUSA (a small, non-COSATU, general workers’ union); · SECC (Soweto Electricity Crisis Campaign) · EE (Equal Education), Gauteng · R2K (Right 2 Know), Gauteng GIWUSA is a one-leader (John Appolis) organisation that does not seem to have had any visible life, or membership, since 2007 at the latest. SECC is a one-leader organisation (Trevor Ngwane) that has been invisible for even longer than GIWUSA. Ngwane is nowadays employed as a researcher at UJ, expecting a doctorate. EE is a fraudulent, funded NGO, posing as a membership organisation. It is led from Cape Town where its most prominent personality is Zackie Achmat. R2K is also NOT a membership organisation, but is a funded general-purpose anti-government lobby. Its prominent leader in Johannesburg is academic and writer, Dr Dale T McKinley. These latter four are some of the last, fading remnants of former “Social Movements”, of self-proclaimed “Civil Society”, and of failed attempts at left-sectarian trade unionism in South Africa. The “coalition” is the only fruit of NUMSA’s activities of the last year or so. This is all they have to show. This “broad coalition” (it has no name) is calling a National Strike. Or, rather, NUMSA is calling a National Strike, because NUMSA is the only organisation in the “broad coalition” with any legal way to call such a strike. The “broad coalition” of hollow, sham entities is supposedly being brought out to show support. Unfortunately for NUMSA, what it actually shows is that NUMSA has no support worthy of the name. Not even in one province does it have support. If this rag-bag of individualists and self-publicists is all that NUMSA can show for its efforts, then NUMSA is openly exposed as being politically bankrupt. Nobody is going to be fooled. This “coalition” is only a stale resuscitation of old, failed sectarian fantasies. There is not going to be any new UDF, or any new United Front, or any anti-communist Socialist Party. It’s all a bust. It is the beginning of the end for the NUMSA nonsense. NUMSA will straighten itself out and become once again a normal affiliate of COSATU, or else it will fade and become a shadow of its former self, like GIWUSA, SECC and the other sham structures of this “coalition”.
