The use of water to create our products is something we are quite sensitive about. As Krya grows, and the sophistication of our formulations grow, the one thing we continue to discuss , research and work out ways is to reduce the use of our natural resources. While none of our products use water in their final form (so no liquid detergent / dishwash or shampoo), we do use a small amount of water while processing our products. The herbs and grains that go into our face wash and body wash are cleaned - first when they are dry and then with water. The dry cleaning occurs for 2 reasons - if the grains have any insects, picking them by hand ensures they are not killed, and we do not waste water. The design for the new Krya eco factory incorporates the harvesting of this wash water so it does not go waste. The reason we are so careful, even anal about the water we use in our products and why we are so insistent on not making water based products, despite many of you asking for more convenient products is simply this. While at this point, ground water basically comes free with land, it should not be. In most of India, ground water is a scarcer resource compared to land. But the lack of definition about ground water rights simply means that anyone who rents or purchases land now has unlimited access to the water below. And this water can be used freely to make both essential and non essential products. This news piece which I share below is yet another instance of private citizens fighting large corporations from taking away their ground water resource to make consumer products. This according to Srinivas Krishnaswamy and myself is why liquid products are inherently unsustainable. And which is why water should be added to a formulation only when a) the formulation is absolutely essential or life saving and a related b) that the product is un-usable without the addition of this water. Apart from the ground water depletion , liquid products automatically demand plastic packaging and strong preservatives. There are many product categories where mindless liquid extensions are taking place. For example liquid detergents. No one really needs a liquid detergent & that too not at such a societal or environmental cost. We have delved deep ( like some of the depleted borewells) into the subject of ground water in this presentation. slidesha.re/1krt9yB And here is the article that provoked this update: livemint/Politics/55tZIXk1ov2ADNcLnVZRwN/Farmers-fight-CocaCola-as-Indias-groundwater-dries-up.html A happy, preservative -free, plastic free Saturday to you!
