The very best advice I can give parents of younger children to increase their academic motivation is to greatly limit TV and video games. Give your kids a copy of National Geographic magazine, a drawing pad with art supplies, or a fairly complex job to complete (sort out money and get it ready to deposit, organize office supplies, etc.). Give them a box of higher level vocabulary words, have them memorize five of the words a day and use them in written sentences. Have them memorize the Gettysburg Address and reward them with $10 when they can recite it to you. Just a few quick ideas I used with my own kids (now Harvard and Princeton grads).
