The war on public education is a very large concern to a great deal of progressives and moderates in the state. Aside from drastic budget cuts, we have bills for moving to a voucher system (HB944), extreme de-regulation of charter schools (SB337), and barring parents from claiming college students who vote from claiming dependency, essentially a $2500 voting tax (SB667.) The Daily Tar Heel article linked directly below states that legislators have cited an unexpected increase in Medicaid costs as a primary factor in the education budget cuts. When you factor in how Gov. McCrory turned down federal funding for Medicaid expansion from the Affordable Care Act, you have a better picture of how the people of our state suffer due to the extremism in our current elected government. dailytarheel/article/2013/05/51a61dbae4655 (Article on education budget cuts) dianeravitch.net/2013/06/20/republicans-in-nc-step-up-their-war-against-public-education/ (Article on the drastic changes to charter schools) huffingtonpost/2013/04/05/north-carolina-college-voting_n_3021110.html (Article on tax changes to college voters) ncae.org/ -MS
