The way this got reported couldnt be starker evidence of how little actual discussion we still do about the realities and varieties of long-term committed relationships, especially in the LGBT community, but amongst straights too. Someone is dating ... therefore theyre off the market, i.e. no longer a commodity for purchase. Because relationships are ownership. And of course a bunch of jealous side-eye will be the inevitable result, because we all know that relationships are either closed or damaged, and for someone to be involved is to be unavailable to anyone but the victorious owner. And well say well, of course we know some people have open relationships but in fact, we DONT know that, because if we knew that we would not find it so easy to mock-lament the withdrawal of a valued commodity from the marketplace. Cue the hiding of the married status of the Beatles in the early 1960s: no teenage girls could possibly buy the music if they thought the boys behind the music were taken. Oh, its just a metaphor. The words we choose dont actually reflect how we think. Do they? This is your LGBT world on ten years of increasing success in marriage equality: ready for the cheering/fainting section at Ed Sullivan, not ready for the bigger context.
