The weather was generally good, however a strong Fife and Tayside team dominated a windy Aberdeen U16 v Fife and Tayside U16 Pathway match..... 1st Half Fife and Tayside received the kick off and immediately put on the pressure, almost scoring in the first five minutes. Good defence from Aberdeen saw a clearance kick collected by Fife and Tayside’s James Cosgrove (15), run back at the defenders and offload to Euan Fox (10) who showed good footwork and ran in under the posts for the first try, which he then converted. Fife and Tayside continued applying the pressure from the restart resulting in a scrum inside the Aberdeen 22. The ball came out and despite the Fife and Tayside team suffering a bit of ‘white line fever’, captain Matt Fagerson (8) scored in the corner. A good attempt from Fox (10) into the wind was unlucky not to go over. For the majority of the half the Fife and Tayside boys kept up the pressure however Aberdeen defended very well and on occasion gave a glimpse of what they were capable of. Fife and Tayside did not let them away with much though and the defensive line speed was key in shutting down a strong centre pairing in the Aberdeen line. A scrum won and pass to Fox (10) and his chip through then put Ross McFarlane (14) over the line with a successful conversion again by Fox (10). After this restart Aberdeen found their footing and attacked very well, pinning the Fife and Tayside team on their 5m line for the next while. After some very good defending, Fox (10) relieved the pressure with a well placed kick for touch. The next score by Fife and Tayside was a well rehearsed pick up by Fagerson (8) from the base of the scrum, pass to Burgess (9) then on to Fox (10) who was running a hard line cutting through the Aberdeen defence to score. Again Fox (10) converted his own try. A lineout in the Aberdeen 22 continued the pressure from the Fife and Tayside boys where another well planned move saw Ruaridh Leader (12) run through and score. In the last five minutes of the half, Fife and Tayside were guilty of taking their foot off the gas and Aberdeen punished them accordingly running in a well drilled score. 2nd Half The second half started much the same as the first with intense pressure from Fife and Tayside from the beginning. A great run along the wing from replacement prop Kieran Grieve (16) gained good ground and a scrum was awarded in the Aberdeen 22. A clash of heads in open play saw Bill Murray (11) back on for the replacement wing Jack Bruce (19) who was forced to retire. A spell of play followed where neither team capitalised, although Aberdeen started to gain the upper hand. Penalties were being given away by both sides until Fife and Tayside managed to keep the boys in red back on their 22. Both teams were working very hard now and after another scrum was awarded to Fife and Tayside, a powerful solo effort by replacement flanker Simon McGarry (18) scoring in the corner eased the deadlock of this half. Another scrum on the Aberdeen 5m line saw good hands from the back row and Ross Pellow (20) went over from close range, with the conversion followed by Fox (10). An instant counter attack from the restart by Bill Murray (11) saw Aberdeen defending ferociously and regaining possesion which they then turned into the long awaited flair that they were capable of. A great link up from the red centres moving the ball from one wing to the other to score in the corner concluded the game. Result: Aberdeen 10 – Fife and Tayside 50
