The word Cult is thrown out a lot these days, sometimes its justified, and other times its not. The best way to cult-proof any church is to ensure that no one, not a man or a woman, or group of men or women, is in charge except for Jesus Christ, who is Head over all things to the church (Eph. 1:22-23.) When the saints are giving Christ Preeminence in all things, then there is no need to embark on some witch hunt while entering into suspicion and paranoia in an us against they mentality, which is the worst way to go, and just shows that when we do just such, that we are not against cults as much as we claim, but however, we just started our own cult in dividing ourselves against others. Only in Christ, who is All-inclusive, are there situations where exclusion is necessary, like for example with persons or groups whose conduct is much like Diotrophes who loves to be first and does not accept or receive those whom the Lord sends to build up, and to encourage the brethren (3 John 1:9.) Hence, the exclusion comes not because others do not agree with us, but the situation is about the Preeminence of Christ, and when others seek to disrupt that by demanding their own preeminence over others. This is dealt with together by the local church in unison of agreement, not with others agreeing with a leading voice over it. When we lay hold of the Head (Col. 2:19), and we are giving Him Preeminence, because He is alone worthy of it, we also are ensured that the Head will protect His own body and no one needs to bring this protection by his or her own individual efforts which never makes a church cult-proof, but just makes it cult-like.
