The word from our Private Bible Study series today: Mat 13:55 – “Are His brothers not, James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? Aren’t all His sisters living here with us?” Strangely, all the brothers of Jesus are named but mention of His nameless sisters are merely tacked on as an etcetera, as an afterthought. No sister is identified by name, don’t refer to male chauvinist thing now, stay focused! Perhaps His sisters failed to follow Him just because they were His sisters. People who live among the foothills often do not recognise the grandeur of the lofty mountain. That principle explains the most poignant tragedy of all, as in John 1:11, we read the saddest words of all, “He came unto His own and His own received Him not”. Just as Christ’s sisters were so close to Him, daily sharing the same dinner table, living and growing up in the same home. Were they aware of the spiritual realities in the One they regarded as their elder brother? The simple lesson for us today is just so we, as church people, we are so near to all that is sacred, the cross and other symbols displayed on the walls. Often meeting each other at the Lord’s Table, are we not in danger of seeing only the things themselves and careless of the spiritual realities behind those things. There is a real danger for me as a preacher, to simply assume and take it for granted that because of my intimacy with religious things, religious places and religious people – that all must be well with my soul.
