The word of God has much to say about our speech. In the book of Proverbs there are several instructions concerning the right and wrong use of the tongue. Here are a few examples: 1. Warning against being talkative, "When there are many words, trangression is unavoidable. But he who restrains his lips is wise"(Proverbs 10:19 NASB). 2.Concerning harsh words, "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger" (Proverbs 15:1 NASB). 3. The power of our words, "Death and life are in the power of the tongue" ( Proverbs 18:21 NASB). The seriousness of this subject is expounded upon the Holy Spirit in James 3, a chapter that has warnings needed for all of us. Many Homes were ruined by misuse of the tongue, and many local assemblies of believers lost their testimony because of careless speech. No wonder David, who indited many beautiful psalms, asks the Lord for Help: "Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight" (Psalm19:14 KJV). Notice the relation between the mouth and the heart: "For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh" (Matthew 12:34). The more we sit in His presence and hear His words, the less likely we will speak carelessly. Of Him it is written that grace was poured into His lips"(Psalm 45:2 JND), this is why "all were speaking well of Him, and wondering at the gracious words which were fallen from His lips" (Luke 4:22 NASB). Seeing the seriousness of this subject may each of us take this matter to the Lord and say with David: "Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips" (Psalm 141:3 NASB).
