The world championship is sanctioned by leading American race - TopicsExpress

The world championship is sanctioned by leading American race organisation Performance Open Wheel Racing Incorporated. Lismore is one of only two Australian tracks selected for the event, the other being Brisbane International Speedway under the promotion of John Kelly. Aucklands Western Springs Speedway hosted the initial four rounds over the Christmas-New Year period, before Brisbane held the fifth and sixth rounds in front of big crowds last weekend. The two Lismore rounds will be held tomorrow night and Saturday night. Midget racing has a great tradition and heritage in Australian speedway tracing back to 1934 when introduced at Melbournes Olympic Park Speedway and soon after that at Wentworth Park in Sydney. Midget cars are among the oldest categories in world motor sport and it is a major coup for Lismore promoter David Lander to be involved with the first official world championship, which has been years in the planning. John (Kelly) and I were approached by American organisers to host rounds and we did not hesitate to come on board with the POWRi organisation, Lander said yesterday. The title will be held along similar lines to the Speedway Grand Prix for bikes on a progressive pointscore system to determine the first official world midget car champion. Similar international midget car events have been held in the past but nothing of the magnitude as this title which also has the backing of the national controlling bodies in Australia and New Zealand.
